When I first began looking at the bird as a subject in my art I had not sought out the historical and cultural meanings of these creatures, but went forward with my own instincts, thoughts and feelings. This subject has taken me on a journey where I have learned a lot about the bird from an ecological, environmental and spiritual level. Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring taught me about the perils caused to birds by our own actions. My own art practice has taught me to look more closely at their fragile, yet enduring, beauty and to look beyond their image to the personal, cultural and spiritual meanings they engage. | |||||||||||||
